Bangladesh achieved its long cherished independence on 16 December 1971 after a nine-month long bloody war. Canada was one of the first few countries to recognize Bangladesh, on 14th February 1972. Canadian public opinion and news media expressed profound sympathy and support for our liberation war in 1971.
Bangladesh and Canada accredited their first High Commissioners to each other’s country in May 1972 and in September 1973 respectively. Since then, there has been a steady and satisfactory development of relations between the two Commonwealth countries. The Bangladesh-Canada relations may be described as close, friendly and cooperative. The existing good relations between the two friendly countries are also manifested in exchange of a high level visits every year.
Canada has always been appreciative of Bangladesh’s active role in the multilateral fora including UN, OIC, SAARC, NAM, LDC group and the Commonwealth. More particularly, Canada in every occasion mentions Bangladesh’s support and cooperation for signing and mastering support for Canada for the Anti-Personal Mine Convention and the Statute for International Criminal Court. Bangladesh, as the only signatory of the CTBT and NPT in the region, received high appreciation of the Canadian government. In the post 9/11 scenario, Canada deeply appreciated Bangladesh’s stance against terrorism.
